Hans-sziget az északi-sarki régióban található a Nares-szoros Kennedy csatornájának közepén, amely elválasztja a kanadai Ellesmere-szigetet Grönlandtól, és összeköti a Baffin-öblöt a Lincoln-tengerrel. Ez az apró sziget hosszú ideje fennálló feszültséget szít Kanada és Grönland (Dán Királyság) között. Fő problémát a sziget feletti szuverenitás jelenti. Azonban további számos tengerjogi kérdés is felmerül a Hans-sziget elhelyezkedéséből adódóan.
