Brexit: social and legal changes for EU citizenship

The European Union of our time is facing many challenges, crises and dangers. The current challenges of integration, which have gained new impetus since the global economic crisis, include the crisis in Ukraine, the refugee crisis, Brexit and, more recently, the COVID–19 pandemic, which are causing social and legal challenges that necessarily have economic implications. In the present study, the authors undertake to explore the social and legal implications of the UK’s withdrawal for individuals (Union citizens) primarily. The study also covers the significant European values associated with individuals (mobility), the European way of life that the new European Commission (2019–2024) aims to promote it. Our main subject of study is the free movement and residency rights as immanent elements of EU citizenship, the changes of which are worth presenting in the light of the Brexit. However, the topic is complex. The social and legal changes of citizenship are strongly affected by the coronavirus emergency, so that has also been presented to the extent necessary for this study.
