Abstract

This study analyses the complex picture of social innovation potential in the counties of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. The aim of our study is to re-examine the municipalities of the two counties from a social innovation perspective, in line with our previous research directions. The aim of our current analysis was to identify the most important processes, against which our previous results can be compared. Given the relatively slow pace of change in territorial processes, we have attempted to analyse a relatively larger time span. Accordingly, we have chosen to focus on the last 3 census years (2001, 2011 and 2022) and have collected our indicators either from these years or from the closest year possible. For the map analysis, we used box plots and examined the relative position change (2001-2022) of the municipalities in the two counties in terms of social innovation potential. In the framework of our research, we studied the evolution of the population of the municipalities according to the change in the positioning of the social innovation potential, as well as the migration balance. Our results show a strong and positive relationship between the social innovation potential and the migration balance, but an improved position only implies a more favourable migration situation in the two counties for short periods, not for the whole period.
