Abstract

Given its special geographical location, the Érmellék is a border land between the Bihar mountains and the Hungarian Great Plain. The types of underground cellars hollowed into sand or earth, characteristic to this historical wine-growing region, were determined by geological and terrain conditions, while the construction of wineyard barns was mainly influenced by social-economic conditions. In this study I analyze the similarities and differences between the vineyard barns characteristic to this historical wine-growing region dating back to the 19th century and the barn types of the vineyards surrounding Debrecen, which have a much more modest historical background. Also I look into the similarities and differences in the location of the two barn types.
