Abstract

The topic of the article is the analytical modeling of the theoretical surface roughness in different machining processes. The steps required for the analytical calculation of the theoretical profile are presented for the case of a surface produced using four different machining methods: turning, face milling, diamond burnishing, and grinding. For the first three of these, theoretical roughness modeling was one of the main research areas of the Institute of Manufacturing Science in the last decade, while the modeling of ground surfaces can be considered a new direction, which is expected to mature in the coming years. The main steps of the methods are described for each procedure, and the calculated results for the first three are also compared with data measured during real experiments.
