Abstract

The paper introduces the principle and experimental realization of a test procedure applied for revealing and characterizing surface residual stresses in glass products. The basic principle of the method consists in, that during scratching the damaged area is proportional to the magnitude of the residual stresses developed in the surface layer of the material. Thus, determination of features suitable for characterizing the residual stress state is possible by computational image analysis of the scratch traces. The paper introduces the principle and methodology of the procedure, as well as presents the most suitable characteristics for differentiating between the different residual stress states of the glasses.
