Animal-assisted therapy was not originally used in prisons: it was something that was used on a variety of different subgroups from the community, the most common groups are people with mental-disorders, the elderly, and children. The present study aims to gain information about prison-based animal programs across international outlook and to describe the characteristics and the effectiveness of the different types of programs that are currently being used.
