Abstract

Until the 1830s and 1840s, the financial services provided by financial institutions in Hungary were small. However, with the change in the legal environment, this situation went through a leap from the 1860s until the First World War. The number of financial institutions rose to over a thousand in half a century, which justified the institutionalized appearance and operation of financial supervision. However, this is the result of a longer process that has emerged after considering a number of theoretical options and heated debates.
